Avengers assemble $1 billion and smash worldwide box

It took The Avengers just 19 days in theatres around the world to hit $US1 billion. It is the first Marvel film and fifth Disney film to cross that threshold.

The second-weekend US gross of The Avengers, which dropped 50.3 percent from its opening weekend, is now the highest on record. The previous record holder was James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi epic Avatar, which earned $US75.6 million in its second weekend.
The Avengers also topped $US300 million in the US after just nine days in release, beating the previous record set by The Dark Knight, which hit that mark in 10 days.
It’s also on track to race up into the top 10 of the all-time US domestic box office chart, currently headed by 1939 classic Gone With The Wind.
